Our approach is to optimise next generation targeted therapeutics for the intravitreal treatment of currently blinding or fatal medical retinal conditions. The unit has developed a complete bench to bedside development pipeline, from high technology discovery work of targeted therapeutics in cell culture systems to unit sponsored clinical trials.

Oculoplastics

The oculofacial plastic surgeons at the Vision Care & Research Centre specialize in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures designed to improve the appearance and function of the eyelids and face, allowing patients to look and feel natural again.

The eyelids and structures around the eyes are critical for vision. Injuries, congenital defects, aging changes and tumors can cause pain, eye damage, vision loss and disfigurement. Changes in the eye's appearance or the loss of an eye can decrease one's ability to interact in social settings and in the workplace.

Along with a variety of cosmetic procedures, our surgeonscan insert implants, reconstruct eyelids and eye sockets, correct eyelid-position abnormalities, remove growths and rebuild critical ocular structures.

The faculty of the Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are currently engaged in research related to the following areas:

  • Volumetric assessment of the eye socket and clinical effects changes as a result of orbital trauma and thyroid eye disease.
  • Computer-assisted surgery of the eye socket
  • Augmented reality application development for soft-tissue facial reconstruction
  • Ophthalmology resident and oculoplastic surgery fellowship education quality improvement and assessment

Vision Science Research

The team predominantly works on epidemiology, aetiology and management of refractive errors, importance and role of optometrists in scientific dispensing of spectacles lenses and frames, effects of lighting on visual perceptions, colorimetric analysis of color vision charts and science of color perception.

Clinical Research

Vision Care & Research Centre, a pioneer in the field of clinical research has a vast experience in various departments of ophthalmology. The areas of interest include development and validation of diagnostic tool for a particular ocular condition, application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the detection and management of ocular conditions, efficacy of treatment and so on.
